Partner Family Requirements

If you would like to apply for a Habitat home, please read the following. If you then feel that you meet the requirements, and are ready to become a homeowner, please print the application from this page and return to our office:

 

1. You must have a housing need (For example: plumbing problems, poor heating, leaks in the roof,  overcrowding, unsafe structure).

2. You need to have lived in our service area (LaPorte County) for at least one year.

3. Your yearly household income including wages, social security, TANF, child support, and any other income must fall within the ranges below.

4. With your permission, we will verify employment and other income, verify checking and saving account balances, get a statement from your current and previous landlords, perform a credit check, and ask for credit references.

5. If approved for a Habitat home, we ask that you be willing to join in programs in order to learn the art of budgeting, home repair, and maintenance.

6. If you are approved for a Habitat home we require that you be willing to work 500 hours of sweat equity, 100 of those hours must be completed before we begin building your home.

7. If approved for a Habitat home, $700 dollars will be needed for a down payment and an additional $800 for loan closing expenses. You will have ample time to save this money before the closing if you are selected. Of this amount only $100 is needed before construction will begin.

8. If you are approved for a home and if you meet the sweat equity and down payment requirements we will then sell you a home at cost. Habitat house payments include taxes and insurance, costing you around $350 a month. The house payments will be used by Habitat to build more homes for other families. Our ability to build more homes requires these payments be made on time.

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit Christian housing ministry, financed through private donations and utilizing volunteer labor.  Our purpose is to build a home with a family and sell the house at no profit and no interest to the family who would not otherwise afford a home.
